Spotlight on Charities Supporting Sierra Leone

TODAY we'll be having an event at Glittering Conscience celebrating the shop's one year anniversary-- an eco-chic birthday party so to speak... It's been a long year since we first opened the store, and we are so proud of how far it's come. Besides our own luxury jewelry line, GC carries amazing and unique green brands by Nahui Ollin, Platinum Dirt, NaturevsFuture, Montree, Temple de Mexico, Kopali Organics, and many, many more. The store does the best it can to operate under a feasibly sustainable manner, using recycled materials for decor and packaging, environmentally-friendly energy, and displays made out of recycled and sustainable materials such as hemp.

To celebrate, we are having a store-wide sale of 20% off everything through the month of December. Not only that, but 10% of proceeds the store makes today during the main event will go to three outstanding charities that support the people of Sierra Leone, Africa, a small country in West Africa that relies mainly on diamond mining as its most economical asset. Perhaps the most remarkable charity involved with the event tonight is Jewels for Africa, which was formed by none other than the children of Wade Watson. Together with their friend Melina, Damon and Christina create unique jewelry using beads and pendants made from natural sources, sell them, then give ALL profits to children at Muddy Lotus, the St. George Orphanage, and the Aberdeen Primary School of Sierra Leone. The funds the schools and orphanage receive goes to providing items like food, clothing, school supplies, and even toys for the less fortunate in need.

Going Green This Holiday Season

So, it's officially December and if you haven't started your holiday shopping yet, it's definitely a good time to get started on at least planning! Last week we posted Glittering Conscience's Black Friday Gift Guide, and that will give you plenty of good ideas for green gifts for everyone on your list.

In this post, we also wanted to focus on how you can go green this holiday season, from using recycled wrapping, to shopping local and supporting small businesses, to making homemade gifts for your friends and family. There are so many ways to save your cash along with your planet too!

First off, recycled wrapping is a must when going green for the holidays. Look for wrapping that says "made from recycled paper" on it, or better yet, recycle your own paper if you happen to have any. If you're not a crazy pack rat who keeps the wrapping and packaging from everything they get, then you can simply use newspaper, old magazines, or an old bag you no longer use. All of R&C's packaging is made from 100% recycled materials.

Making homemade gifts is always extra sweet, and it will likely mean more to the person you give it to since it's much more personal. There are lots of things you could make, such as ornaments, paintings if you're an artist, picture frames, hand-knit scarves, home-baked cookies...the possibilities in this category really are endless!

Saving energy is a simple thing you could do to stay green this season. If you hang lights for decoration or on your tree, turn outdoor lights off during the day and indoor tree lights off at night. We only use Earth-friendly CFL light bulbs in our offices and in Glittering Conscience.

Be sure to recycle your tree after it's finally ready to take it down...as in when the pine needles start to turn brown and cover more of your floor than the branches. If you're like some people, you'll like to keep your tree up well past New Year's, and that's a good way to make it last and get what you paid for- and also help the tree to serve its purpose in this case! Some people choose to get a fake Christmas tree believing it will last much longer and deter the chopping down of trees, but the truth is they are actually much worse for the environment since they are made from toxic chemicals linked to causing cancer such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and when they eventually do get thrown out, they are burned and the chemicals are released into the air. Real trees freshen the air, and you're also supporting local farmers when you buy a living tree, which can be grown organically.

Shop smart this year as many are still suffering from the weak economy (despite the crazy news we saw after Black Friday involving pepper-spraying shoppers and police brutality!). Support your local shopping district; support small businesses, like Glittering Conscience and Ruff&Cut; buy eco-friendly items; and most importantly of all, don't give in to over-consumerism- just because it's the holidays, that doesn't mean you have to buy a bunch of useless junk that no one will ever use. Get gifts that will last, or that will really make an impression. Endless Color designer, Jennifer Schelhorn, has really done it this time though! She has created R&C's first charm bracelet and given it the honor of naming it after herself (how appropriate!).

Ruff&Cut and Glittering Conscience were pleased to attend the Eco Luxe-hosted Luxury Review this year at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC. The event boasted the best of the best luxury industries, including jewelry, clothing, automotive, and electronics. This year, the event focused on environmentally responsible innovations provided by each vendor, so of course our booth drew a lot of attention. Not All that Glitters is Gold

In a collectibles box I’ve had for over 20 years, I keep my watches, cufflinks, tie tacks, rings,
bracelets, charms, chains, silver business card holder and other expensive looking knick-knacks. I don’t even wear tie tacks! My wife has about four of these kinds of jewelry boxes of various sizes and qualities. In her boxes are unmatched earrings, chains that go back for decades, school rings, pendants that don’t fit on anything and gifts from ex-boyfriends that mean more in the box than anything else.

As I write this blog today, I quickly Google the price of gold- $1,650 per ounce. What does that mean? Hmmmmm, you are thinking, maybe I have an ounce of gold in all of those pieces I don’t wear? Perhaps, but probably not. Let me explain what it means when something is stamped 14k or 18k in karat weight. A 24k piece is pure gold, and 14k and 18k are gold blended with other materials. Sometimes you'll find the number 5.85 stamped (or hallmarked as they say in the United Kingdom) on a gold piece, and this actually means the same things as 14k. This refers to the percentage of pure gold the piece is made of: 14k equals 58.5% of pure gold, and 18k is 75% pure gold.

Pure gold

With gold recently weighing in as high as $1,850 per ounce, the “cash for gold” business is literally booming. Some radio advertisements call it “the next gold rush” and many newspapers frequently advertise, “top cash paid”, for your extra gold.

I have always thought of jewelers who advertise “cash for gold” or hang signs in their windows that proclaim, “We buy diamonds!”, as kind of tacky. During the 2009 Super Bowl, I was blown away when M.C. Hammer and Ed McMahon were touting, “Send your gold in and we will send you cash!” Remember, those ads cost $2 million per minute! These places MUST be making big bucks. There was an exposé written in USA Today describing the business practices of this organization, and let’s just say it was not flattering. The bottom line is that the consumer does not know the true liquidation value of their old and all-but-forgotten jewelry.

When the ad says, “we buy gold for cash”, here is what the process typically involves: you bring in a broken gold chain, they weigh the chain and look for a karat marker or hallmark with a magnifying glass. Sometimes they will even test the gold chain piece with a device that looks like a battery meter reader or they may even use a dabble of a chemical mix that will tell the percentage/karat weight. They will then routinely offer 20-30% of the true value of the gold you are selling. Since most customers do not know the real cost of gold, someone offering you $400 for a ring may seem like a great deal. If you came to us, we’d probably offer double that. But, how can we do that and what is it based on?

Today’s gold price closed at $1,637.60. Remember that the price per ounce also translates to a price per gram. At today’s closing per ounce, gold is $52.72 per gram. Once you see the gram weight of the gold and know the karatage, you have an approximate value of grams per pure gold. Turning the gold into cash is a little more complicated because it has to be refined to pure gold to realize any value. If you figure the weight of the piece you are recycling times the price per gram (divided by the percentage of karat) and then figure 20% for the price of cash and refining cost, you can now calculate what the fair price should be, less the cost of refining the gold. We do this routinely and as a result, pay two to three times what the “cash for gold” hustlers will pay. No one can give you 100% value because of the costs involved in refining the gold, and the chemicals needed to return it to its true form.

Refining process

More importantly, we got into the jewelry business with incredible collections of raw and polished diamonds and colored gemstones all set in certified recycled gold and silver. We create custom pieces starting with a pad of paper and a sketch, and then make that piece of jewelry you’ve always wanted go from your imagination to your neck or finger. Imagine melting down all your mismatched earrings, chains and gold you have not worn in 10 years, and making that diamond and gold peace sign pendant you always wanted.

Now just imagine what we could create for you...

For example, a recently divorced woman came into the store with an engagement ring she wanted to turn into something new. First we explored a necklace with a pendant, and she said no because it would remind her of her ex. I looked at her legs and noticed a very cool ankle bracelet. I suggested, “Let’s make a toe ring out of it to go with match that ankle bracelet.” She looked intrigued. I continued, “If we make a very cool toe ring, every step you take you will be walking on your ex. And, you will be the only woman with a 2 carat GIA certified diamond on your toe!” She loved the idea! I weighed the ring and gave her a $600 credit, and then we measured her toe and took the pad of paper out to design the piece. Since delivery and every time I’ve seen her since that day, she stomps her foot in delight!

Our message is, in today’s world we need to constantly think about reducing, reusing and recycling. This mentality is the expression of our generational values. This recession may be breaking you and you need cash, or it’s keeping you from getting engaged or buying that great piece of jewelry your loved one wants. Now there is a solution to this dilemma. You can reuse – redesign – and recycle that old gold into an heirloom in waiting. After that, you may even have money left over to buy another gift for another loved one….

We've already told you about the new retail store we helped to open up in SoHo in December 2010 called Glittering Conscience- the name taken from our signature tagline, "Glittering conscience...socially responsible luxury." Perfect name for a shop carrying exclusively Earth-friendly products, don'tcha think? We sure thought so, and so did our partners Danny Bitran of Nahui Ollin, Nina Valenti of NaturevsFuture, and Kate Harrison of The Green Bride Guide.

Jewels for Africa!!

Perhaps they were inspired by their Dad, or perhaps it's just in their blood, but Christina and Damon Watson along with their friend Melina Driscoll decided they wanted to help the children in Sierra Leone, Africa too. Not only did they decide they wanted to help, but they decided to take a another cue from their dear old Dad and also make their own jewelry using naturally-sourced materials such as stones, glass beads, and cotton cord.

Together the kids, now age 10-12, came up with Jewels for Africa, a completely non-profit jewelry making biz. All funds go directly to children in the St. George Orphanage, the Aberdeen Primary School, and the Muddy Lotus Primary School, all of Sierra Leone. The children there can use this money to buy school supplies, new clothes, and pay for meals, all things that are desperately needed in the impoverished communities. The trio has already raised well over $2,000 for the cause already!

We have gotten a fair share of customers who were kind enough to divulge upon us their pleasant experiences with Ruff&Cut, from choosing their ring, to working with us to find that perfect diamond, to getting their ring just in the nic of time for the grand proposal. We've received pictures, emails, kind words...but, the testimonial below really takes the cake, and we hope it will touch your heart like it did ours.

Our experience with Ruff & Cut and Glittering Conscience: I could sum this up in a few “one-worders”, such as: intimate, personal, flawless, memorable, honest, fun (!) and perfect. I could leave it at that and you would get the idea, but I won’t. I’ll tell you exactly why Glittering Conscience with Ruff & Cut made our engagement something to always remember.

Ariana and I decided to commemorate our domestic partnership on May 12, 2011 with rings. At the time, in New York, a domestic partnership was the only marriage-esque right afforded to us and even without the term “legally married”, we were ready and more importantly- determined- to ourselves treat this next step of our relationship with the utmost love, respect and commitment and were going to symbolize this just as any other couple would do: with rings.

Now, knowing my fiancée (and myself), I knew we would not be making any trips to your run of the mill jewelry stores and just “picking a ring.” No, no. Our rings would have to be special. They would have to be different. They would have to be unique; beautiful; fitting to our individual personalities; and just as importantly, they would have to be socially responsible.

Ariana let me know the moment she had found just the place and we haven’t looked back since. In web searching basically exactly these adjectives- special, different, unique, beautiful, and socially responsible jewelry - she came across the company of Ruff & Cut. She looked at their statement of who they are and what they represent (‘each diamond, conflict-free and as yet untampered with by human hands, exhibits a vital beauty that is undeniable. The marriage of this beauty with recycled metals in organic shapes and distinctive silhouettes articulates and honors the singular splendor of the land and the peoples who bring these precious things into the world.’) Reading this brings me back to one of the words used to describe our experience: perfect. This was exactly what we were looking for and then it got even better- they have a shop here in New York City, Glittering Conscience, not 5 blocks from where I work. This surely was too good to be true, right?

May 12, 2011: Our first experience with Ruff & Cut by way of Glittering Conscience. Hours after our domestic partnership and after many, many visits to their online site, www.ruffandcut.com, we made our way to the store to start the process of deciding on our rings. Enter Jennifer Schelhorn. Jen has been with us in this process since day one and we couldn’t have had it any better. On this day, she gave us an overview of the company, showed us around the shop, let us look at all the different types of jewelry that they make and basically got us completely introduced to the wonderfulness that is Ruff & Cut and Glittering Conscience. She told us about Wade Watson, the founder and head of Ruff & Cut and got us uber-excited to go on this journey with them in making our rings. We left the store that day, not yet knowing what rings we would be working with (the options were literally endless!) but knowing one thing for sure: we would be working solely with Ruff & Cut, Glittering Conscience and specifically Jen and Wade to help us navigate this experience.

Ariana and I spent the next 3 weeks going over ideas in our heads and on paper as to what we wanted our individual rings to be- did we want diamonds, just bands, each other’s birthstones, rings exactly alike, rings different from one another, yellow gold, silver, white gold; did we want to completely design them ourselves or work with one of their existing collections? As I said, the options were literally endless which can really take you all over the place in terms of finally deciding what is right, but as I also said, Jen was there for us from day one and we could email her any time and she gave us immediate and more so, personal feedback.

June 4, 2011: Our second trip to Glittering Conscience. The purpose of this day’s trip to the shop was to start putting some of these ideas we had been coming up with into real terms. We met with Jen this day and she brought out the inventory… great day! Book after book after book of stones, each with individualization to it. Did we want black diamonds, true diamonds, morganite, sapphire, amethyst, quartz, citrine, etc. (I could go on, believe me)? Did we want rough diamond or smooth? Did we want smooth band or hammer band? What shape? What size? Suffice it to say, we spent a great deal of time in the shop this day as we were, even after spending three weeks thinking about it, blank canvases. This was when Jen really shined. She, aside from being eternally patient with us, was so helpful to work out any questions we had and provide really insightful advice as to what she thought would work best with whatever idea we were working with at that moment. We left that day feeling inundated (in a great way) with information but really starting to see the abstractness take shape. Next, we needed to meet Wade.

June 19, 2011: We met with Wade on this date to do a not-so-final-but- final-esque ring consultation. Today, we were going to put our ideas in motion. We met with Wade (and Jen) at 4pm and this was a dream come true. He sat and talked with us (on the ultra-comfy couches, I might add) about who we both were- both as individuals and as a couple- and got a sense of what were looking for in our rings. He told us about him, his family- even showing us pictures of his beautiful kids, and everything, everything there is to know about Ruff & Cut, Glittering Conscience and how it is that he came into this concept. We soaked up every detail of this just mesmerized by the fact that exactly what we were looking for in a ring experience and its company were literally right here. This didn’t have the air of “shopping”; it had the feel of familiarity and comfort- both of which too often are completely sidestepped in the world of consumerism. After a while of talking, we got down to business. Ariana and I each told Wade and Jen the types of bands we each wanted, we picked our individual stones, we picked our individual designs, we sized our fingers and we were set. I decided on a variation of the geode ring, complete with hammered white gold band and a ruff diamond that would stand out on top. Ariana went with a variation of the aureole ring, complete with hammered yellow gold band and a ruff diamond that would peak on top. Understand that Ariana and I, while we have very different styles, wanted there to be some semblance of uniformity in our rings and that was why we chose very similar diamonds as well as the hammered band- both for this engagement ring as well as the wedding band we decided on to compliment the set. We honestly could not have been happier, even if these rings wouldn’t be used in an “actual” marriage ceremony. Or would they?

If you are following the dates at all, and follow anything in terms of New York news, you will see that June 19, 2011 was only a few days shy of one of the most monumental days in New York state legislature history: June 24, 2011- Same-Sex Marriage is legalized. A difference of a mere five days! My fiancée has always, as long as I have known her, been a strong proponent of putting into the universe that which you desire. Now, here we are, June 19^th clearly putting it out there that we want to be married, even going so far as to design rings with or without state legislative acceptance and then BAM! Five days later, those rings suddenly have a new meaning. They were engagement rings and wedding bands after-all.

Wade and Jen were as happy for us as we were in this news. They knew how much these rings meant to us, even without the legal recognition, but now, this was just surreal. Wade even texted us the night that the bill was passed. What more could you want from the people making the rings you intend to wear forever as a symbol of your love? This is why we didn’t go in to your “run of the mill jewelry store”; or better yet they are why.

Now, we just had to wait for the rings to be ready. This would only take a few weeks but as you can imagine, we couldn’t get them soon enough! Nevertheless, Wade and Jen stayed in touch with us each week letting us know the progress and updating us on any news as to the exact date they would be ready. And then, they were ready!

July 10, 2011: Engagement day!! We went to Glittering Conscience at 2:00 and there was Wade and Jen, ready with champagne and our rings and we couldn’t have been more elated. They were here and ready for us to take home and we were thrilled. We tried them on, took pictures, drank champagne, sat and talked with Wade and Jen and just smiled. Not even two months had gone by since we first walked into Glittering Conscience and now here we were, ready to get engaged with the rings that we loved. This was a great day. (Just a side note- we decided to make two minor alterations—me downsizing my band size by .5 and Ariana adding some hammering to around her stone— and even though neither of these were the result of miscommunication on either Wade or Jen’s parts but rather “after the fact changes” that we elected to make, Wade and Jen took care of this right away, further ensuring that we were 110% happy with our rings.)

I can’t say enough about Wade, Jen, Glittering Conscience or Ruff & Cut. Even this excessively long narrative doesn’t do it justice. For some people, a less involved approach such as just picking a ring from a display case may be a better method and to them, I say, that is wonderful for you. But for us, we wanted the personalization, the intimacy, the connection, the experience, the involvement, the uniqueness, the eco-friendliness, the personal friendliness (they texted us when the bill passed and got us champagne on the day our rings were ready for God’s sake!), and the open communication… and that is exactly what we got, and more, from our experience with Wade, Jen, Glittering Conscience and Ruff & Cut. Simply put: it was perfection from start to finish.

Glittering Gems

When R&C first began back in 2008, we exclusively used rough and cut diamonds and 18k gold and sterling silver- all ethically sourced and recycled, of course! As time progressed, we progressed too when we noticed the sudden emergence in the popularity of colored gemstones. Most likely this was due- at least in part -to the economical downturn, meaning people simply just could not afford their favorite shining stones like they used to.

Luckily, we knew of a magical company called Columbia Gem House, a company that, "adheres to The Quality Assurance and Fair Trade Gems Protocols." All of their gemstones are ethically sourced, and cut and polished right on site, and all are always of the most superior color and quality you can find.

Focus on Men's Jewelry

Something that we at R&C have been noticing lately is the new demand for men's jewelry. Previously a very small and limited market design-wise, we’ve now been getting direct phone calls and requests from customers, friends and even the press who are all wondering when we’ll be adding more pieces for the less targeted gender in the jewelry industry.

We already have the very popular Skulls Collection which carries gender-neutral pieces like in the images below. But, what if you’re not into skulls? What if you’re a bit more conservative, but still like to look good and add your own touch to that suit you wear to the office, or the shirt and pants you wear out after work with your buddies?

A little jewelry industry insider information...

What makes Ruff&Cut ethical, you ask?

In the jewelry industry, it is a very daunting task to be ethical. Most diamonds lack any type of transparency, miners are paid the smallest salary, and with the high prices you may be asking yourself just where does the money all go. How could something so tiny cost so much? After all, it comes right out of the Earth.

I used to ask myself the same question. Never one for fine jewelry unless it was given to me as a gift, I usually stuck to the cheaper costume style jewelry that you’d find at h&m. My idea of sustainable was buying second-hand at the flea market. Paying $500+ for a little bracelet? Forget about it! Beyond outrageous, right?

But, then I scored a little gig working in the office of a fresh new jewelry company called Ruff&Cut and I got to learn a little bit more about how the whole operation works. I got to meet the designers and see just how much work goes in to not only coming up with the concept of each design, but of the sketching and model making and working with the metalsmiths. Then the laborous jobs of the jewelry casters who work with all kinds of crazy-looking tools and flames and magnifiers so that they can see the tiny cuttings they have to make to get the detailing on a design just right, like the veins on a leaf pendant or the filagree on a bezel.

All these things add up, and we haven’t even touched the cost of diamonds and metals surface. Although silver and gold prices were down not too long ago, they’ve recently gone up and will likely continue to rise due to the decreasing value of the dollar. The mining and shipping of diamonds and gems, as we all infamously know, doesn’t come cheap either, and with all the issues surrounding finding a trustworthy source for those precious rocks (think Blood Diamond), you have to pay top dollar most of the time to be sure you’re getting a conflict-free stone.

After all is said and done, then we have to be able to pay a ton of overhead and if the jewelry is selling in a store rather than online, the retailer gets half the profits from whatever they sell. A lot more goes into making and selling jewelry than I ever imagined, and now I’m just left amazed that women mainly only like jewelry because it’s sparkly. After reading this, I hope they get a deeper love and respect.

With the economy as it is, it’s no surprise the industry is suffering, although not as much as you might think. The smaller sustainable jewelry industry- despite getting a lot of media attention –struggles in particularly since there are still a lot of people out there who could care less whether their diamond is conflict-free or not. But, we’re gaining more and more “conscious” minds everyday and the amount of rough diamond engagement rings we’ve sold to young women goes to show this new generation holds a lot of promise.

The point I’m trying to make is that even though that little ring on your finger may not look like much in girth even if it is a lot in appearance, a lot goes into making it, and when you buy an Earth-friendly and socially responsible piece of jewelry, it glitters all the more brightly.

As described in the previous post, tonight Glittering Conscience in conjunction with GothamGear is hosting the Food, Wine and Charity event to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Furthermore, now the non-profit Right-to-Write, which supports supplying education in developing countries, has joined the charitable spirit and hosts will be taking donations of pens and pencils to give to the organization.

We hope you will join us tonight for a charitable shopping event that is sure to be a success! Event starts at 6pm at 96 West Houston St between Thompson and Laguardia in SoHo.

We have a great new event coming up that will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The event will be held at our Glittering Conscience store location on May 3, 2011 starting at 6pm and going on until the sun comes up! (Or until everyone remembers they have work the next day and decides it’s time to head home). Complimentary light fare and wine will be served and 10% of proceeds for the evening will go to the Foundation.

Normally R&C and Glittering Conscience have held charitable shopping events to support impoverished communities and people in Africa, specifically Sierra Leone, so you might be wondering what lead us to team up with the MJF Foundation. It was actually chosen by Jennifer Goodman of GothamGear- a new vendor to Glittering Conscience, and her event co-host, Susan Bilotta. The funny thing is, two members of the Ruff&Cut team- including Founder, Wade Watson –have had experiences with Parkinson’s affecting a family member. So, although this was an aberrant choice of charity, it still manages to hold a place in our hearts.

We hope that those in the NYC area will stop by Wednesday, May 3^rd starting at 6pm for this special shopping soiree. All of Ruff&Cut’s current and readily available collections will be there for you to gaze upon and try on in-person, as well as R&C’s other all-color brand, Klido. GC also carries Arm Candy by Nahui Ollin, NaturevsFuture, c5 Company, and many other great eco-conscious brands and products.

There’s a lot going on at Ruff&Cut these days…

We opened our first retail store, Glittering Conscience, in December 2010 and have been steadily gaining success ever since. We’ve added a larger selection of lower-price point jewelry featuring colored gemstones that have all been a real hit. And on April 13^th, we were fortunate enough to attend a special benefit dinner hosted by Exit Art, a non-profit organization based in New York that supports art and artists in all forms, but specifically those that instigate social change.

As a sponsor of this event, we gifted 50 of our Silver Enduring Skulls Chokers to the committee and 50 of our Silver Ruff Sandpiper Pins to guests in the goody bags pictured below.
